This work consists of two components:

First, Informatics Competencies for Public Health Professionals in 2002 defined a consensus set of informatics competencies required by public health professionals:

  1.  Front Line Staff,
  2.  Senior Level Staff
(epidemiologists, attorneys, biostatisticians, health planners, health policy analysts), and
  3.  Supervisory and Management Staff.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Second, Building on this effort, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in conjunction with the Association of Schools of Public Health and the University of Washington, convened an expert panel with representation from local, state and federal public health organizations, professional associations and academia. This panel worked through 2006 to create a formal definition and consensus set of NEW competencies for the public health informatician at two levels of expertise:

  1.  Public Health Informatician, and
  2.  Senior level Public Health Informatician.
