Researching Emergency Communication
Dr. Janet Baseman of CPHI Receives Grant for New Research

<< Back to News & Events

The University of Washington's (UW) Center for Public Health Informatics (CPHI) is dedicated to supporting innovative research into information strategies and technologies to improve the health of the public. That's why CPHI is thrilled to announce a recently-awarded research grant to investigate the communication between public health agencies and healthcare professionals.CPHI Center for Public Health Informatics

The new grant for Preparedness and Emergency Response Research Centers, known as the PERRC Grant, was awarded to seven research centers across the nation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Here in the northwest, it was awarded to the UW's Northwest Center for Public Health Practice (NWCPHP) with Mark Oberle, M.D., M.P.H., as the Principal Investigator (P.I.). The NWCPHP will team up with CPHI and Public Health Seattle King County to complete the research.

The Washington initiative is comprised of three projects, which will be overseen by the three organizations. The three major components are:

1. Improving 911 and public health call center interactions with non-English speaking callers;
2. Improving emergency health alerts between public health and healthcare providers; and
3. Exploring the use of texting and other cellular technologies to research vulnerable populations before and during emergencies.

Janet Baseman, Ph.D., from CPHI will be P.I. of the second project identified above. Dr. Baseman's project, titled "A Randomized Trial of Communication Methods Between Public Health and Health Care Providers," focuses on the best ways to reach diverse groups of health care providers with information for emergencies. It will evaluate and compare the effectiveness of current and novel message delivery systems and communication methods between public health and health care providers within and across three study sites: King County, Washington; Kitsap County, Washington; and Montana State. The goal of the project is to improve public health systems for emergency preparedness and response.

The project will look at frequency and timeliness of alerts, awareness of message content, and perceived credibility of messages between public health agencies and health care providers. Dr. Baseman's project is a collaboration across academia, local and state public health agencies, and tribal and community organizations.
